which oxidizes H 2 S to persulfide. SQRs were initially identified in invertebrates, and their mammalian counterpart SQRs were later discovered (Theissen et al., 2003; Theissen and Martin, 2008). In the presence of O 2 and water, sulfur dioxygenase oxidizes persulfide to sulfite, which is combined with another persulfide molecule by sulfur transferase rhodanese in order to producing thiosulfate (Figure 1). Because H 2 S consumption by a dioxygenase is high in the presence of O 2 (Furne et al., 2008), high H 2 S production is offset by rapid H 2 S clearance under aerobic conditions, accounting for very low basal levels of H 2 S. Small deviations in the rates of H 2 S production and clearance may lead to rapid and several-fold changes in the H 2 S levels (Vitvitsky et al., 2012).

High turnover rates for hydrogen sulfide allow for rapid regulation of its tissue concentrations.

AIMS Hydrogen sulfide (H(2)S) is a signaling molecule, which influences many physiological processes. While H(2)S is produced and degraded in many cell types, the kinetics of its turnover in different tissues has not been reported. In this study, we have assessed the rates of H(2)S production in murine liver, kidney, and brain homogenates at pH 7.4, 37°C, and at physiologically relevant cystein...

Hydrogen sulfide removal from biogas using chemical absorption technique in packed column reactors

The toxicity and corrosion potential of hydrogen sulfide in raw biogas underlines the need for biogas purification. Several techniques available for removal of hydrogen sulfide from biogas are out of the reach for common end users due to lack of knowledge, higher running costs, and insufficient operational skills. The present experimental study aims to propagate hydrogen sulfide removal techniq...

Chemical and biological mobilization of Fe(II1) in marsh sediments

Iron reduction in marine sulfitic environments may occur via a mechanism involving direct bacterial reduction with the use of hydrogen as an electron donor, direct bacterial reduction involving carbon turnover, or by indirect reduction where sulfide acts to reduce iron. In the presented experiments, the relative importance of direct and indirect mechanisms of iron reduction, and the contributio...

Surviving blood loss using hydrogen sulfide.

BACKGROUND Reduced metabolic activity improves outcome in many clinical and experimental models of injury and diseases that result in insufficient blood supply. Recently, we demonstrated that inhaled hydrogen sulfide gas can be used to reversibly reduce metabolic activity in mice. We hypothesize that hydrogen sulfide will confer benefit in injuries and diseases related to insufficient blood sup...

Hydrogen sulfide and organic compounds removal in municipal wastewater using ferrate (VI) and ultraviolet radiation

Background: In this study, ferrate (VI) and ultraviolet (UV) radiation were employed to remove hydrogen sulfide from municipal wastewater resulting in a reduction in chemical oxygen demand (COD). Although ferrate (VI) and UV have been used individually for the removal of a few pollutants from urban and industrial wastewater, there exists no study to investigate the effectiveness of si...

Hydrogen sulfide improves vessel formation of the ischemic adductor muscle and wound healing in diabetic db/db mice

Objective(s): It has been demonstrated that hydrogen sulfide plays a vital role in physiological and pathological processes such as regulating inflammation, oxidative stress, and vessel relaxation. The aim of the study was to explore the effect of hydrogen sulfide on angiogenesis in the ischemic adductor muscles of type 2 diabetic db/db mice and ischemic diabetic wound...
